5 lovely Christmas traditions to enjoy in Singapore

November 7, 2024

Though fewer than a fifth of people living in Singapore identify as Christian, Christmas continues to be a popular holiday in the Lion City.

As an expat, while you may have plenty of your own family traditions that you like to honour at Christmas, Singapore has lots of its own traditions that you might enjoy taking part in too. In fact, throughout November and December, you’ll find many residents and visitors getting into the Christmas spirit at some of the many local festive events held at this time of year.

Read on to discover five fun Christmas traditions to try this festive season in Singapore.

1. The Orchard Road Christmas light-up

One of the highlights of the Christmas season in Singapore is the Orchard Road light-up, which has been delighting visitors every year since 1984. In its early days, the tradition simply saw trails of lightbulbs illuminating the street, but today it has become a grand affair.

This year, the light-up will run from 9 November until 1 January, and will feature an array of activities and spectacles, including:

  • Pop-up stores
  • Live music performances
  • A Christmas Eve street party
  • 3D and augmented reality shows
  • A 14-metre-tall Christmas tree with nightly snowfall shows.

Orchard Road is the perfect place to visit with family, friends, or colleagues to celebrate and enjoy the festive season.

2. A fun-filled day out at Gardens of the Bay

Alongside Orchard Road, Gardens of the Bay is another exciting destination, particularly during the festive period as it hosts its famous Christmas Wonderland.

The event has been a popular attraction since its introduction in 2014, and around 5 million people have visited it since then. As such, it’s become an important tradition for many families who like to visit the Christmas Wonderland during December.

This year, the event promises to be bigger and better than ever before, featuring more light displays and performances alongside the features that regular visitors have grown to love. One of the most magical experiences is the “snowfall” that you can experience each evening.

If you haven’t already, you could start a new family tradition of visiting the Gardens of the Bay this Christmas.

3. Enjoying traditional western Christmas food

Christmas is usually a time for feasting and indulging in seasonal treats, and that’s no different in Singapore. Though there isn’t a traditional Singaporean dish for Christmas, getting together with friends, family, or colleagues to enjoy a meal is a must.

Most hotels and restaurants in the city will offer a set festive menu or buffet, featuring an array of traditional western Christmas dishes, such as roast turkey, as well as local delicacies for you to enjoy.

4. Carolling and Christmas concerts

Christmas in Singapore is a time when music can be heard throughout the city, so no matter what type of music you like, there’s bound to be something you’ll enjoy.

Churches, charities, and hospitality venues often arrange carol concerts that are free or cost very little to join in with, allowing everyone to take part and feel festive. You’ll also find lots of musical performances taking place to candlelight, adding a touch of wonder to some classic Christmas tunes.

5. Giving to charitable causes

Charitable giving is an important part of Christmas in Singapore, and not just for Christian organisations. Charities of all faiths and denominations collect donations and host fundraising events during December to support good causes and help those in need.

There are lots of ways you could join in, from volunteering with a charity, attending a fundraising event, or simply making a donation to a cause you care about.
